3 books about seeds and squirrels
Watching squirrels get ready to cozy up for the winter is sparking snuggly vibes in our house.
Does anyone else have a difficult time finding cute boy clothes?
I had been searching for way too long for a reasonably priced mid-weight coat for my five year old that didn’t look too boring, grown up, or just plain weird—and I finally found this one—but it really shouldn’t have taken as many hours as it did. If you have a favorite place to shop for your son, please let me know in the comments!
As you might guess from my coat search, the weather has turned chilly here in the Midwest, and we are bundling up for our nature walks. My three year old is amassing quite a large acorn collection to donate to the squirrels in our backyard, so in that spirit, below are three books about acorns, squirrels and seeds that we have been reading lately!

“Little Acorn” written by Melanie Joyce
This is a sweet book that follows the life cycle of an acorn. “Little Acorn” balances the science with story, which I very much appreciate for the under-five audience. The illustrations are charming, the rhymes are just right, and my daughter is torn between giving her acorn collection to the squirrels and planting them all over the yard so they can grow into trees.
Recommended age: 2 - 6 years
“The Busy Little Squirrel” written by Nancy Tafuri
As a little squirrel dashes around a farm, various animals invite him to partake in their fun. But the hardworking squirrel barely even takes notice—he’s just too busy getting ready for winter. My three year old loves to tell me what is keeping Squirrel so busy on each page, and she also loves to find the second squirrel (who we’ve decided is the neighbor) hiding on each page.
This book is simple and sweet, and it’s a great read to get your little ones in the autumnal “hunker down and cozy up” mood—just like Squirrel.
Recommended age: 1 - 3 years
“The Tiny Seed” written and illustrated by Eric Carle
This classic Eric Carle book explores the life cycle of a seed in Carle’s signature simple, yet thrilling, style. My three and five year olds were equally engaged in this story, and they were quite heartbroken to send it back to the library. This one will likely be joining our home library quite soon!

Little acorn is one of my favorites. I love how it explains seasonal shifts. Lots of things for little readers to look at and learn about packed into a small board book!
Love The Busy Little Squirrel -- it was one of the ones we read over and over when my babies were tiny.
